Specialist expertise & individual care at the Surgery & Endoscopy Centre 1160
Expertise

Severe overweight puts a strain not only on the mind but also on physical health: diabetes, high blood pressure, joint problems and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease are common consequences. When diets, exercise and other treatment attempts fail to bring lasting success, bariatric surgery can offer an effective and sustainable solution.
At the Surgery & Endoscopy Centre 1160, Dr Bernd Weiner provides bariatric surgery treatments and modern weight-loss surgery methods – tailored to the individual, medically sound and delivered with personal support. When you are treated by Dr Weiner, you can count on personal care and comprehensive aftercare.
What types of bariatric surgery are there?
Bariatric surgery encompasses various surgical procedures for weight loss. The aim is to reduce food intake or absorption and promote a feeling of fullness, achieving lasting results.
The most common procedures include:
- Gastric bypass
A combination of restrictive and malabsorptive techniques. The stomach is reduced in size and part of the small intestine is bypassed. Highly effective for weight loss and metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes. - Gastric sleeve
The stomach is reduced to around 15% of its original volume. Gastric sleeve surgery leads to quicker satiety and reduces the production of the hunger hormone ghrelin. - Gastric band
An adjustable silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. It slows food intake and promotes a feeling of fullness. This method is less invasive but not suitable for everyone.
Which method is right for you will be discussed individually during a detailed consultation at our practice in Vienna 1160.
When does bariatric surgery make sense?
Weight-loss surgery may be an option if:
- Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is above 40
- Or from a BMI of 35 in the presence of related conditions (e.g. type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure)
- Conservative measures (dietary changes, exercise, behavioural therapy) have been unsuccessful
- You wish to avoid the long-term health risks associated with excess weight
The decision to undergo weight-loss surgery is never taken lightly. Dr Weiner supports you from the very beginning – with professional expertise, thorough medical guidance and personal empathy.
Which treatments & operations do we perform?
As part of bariatric surgery at the Surgery & Endoscopy Centre 1160, we offer:

What requirements must I meet for bariatric surgery?
A BMI over 40 (or over 35 with associated health conditions), along with unsuccessful conservative measures, are the basic requirements. A thorough medical and psychological assessment is carried out beforehand.
Which method is best suited to me?
Whether gastric bypass, gastric sleeve or gastric band – the right choice depends on your health situation, eating habits and other factors. We advise you individually.
Is the operation carried out as an inpatient procedure?
Yes. Weight-loss surgery is carried out at a specialised hospital. We personally take care of your aftercare at our practice.
How much weight will I lose after bariatric surgery?
Results vary from person to person. In many cases, patients lose 60–80% of their excess weight within the first 12–18 months.
Does statutory health insurance cover the costs?
In many cases, statutory health insurers cover the costs of bariatric surgery once certain criteria are met. We are happy to support you with the application and liaising with your insurer.
